Tempered Over Half a Century! Ceramic master Tsai Jung-Yu ’s “Creative Life” opens at the Seaport Art Center; private courtyard masterpiece “Reunion” makes its first relocated appearance

The Taichung City Seaport Art Center is grandly presenting “Creative Life - 2026 Tsai Jung-Yu  Solo Exhibition” starting today. This exhibition is not only a heartfelt retrospective of half a century of creative work by national treasure-level ceramic artist Tsai Jung-yu, but is also highly noteworthy: the bronze sculpture “Reunion”, long displayed in the courtyard of the master’s private art space, Guangda Art Garden, has, in response to the atmosphere of the Seaport Art Center, been relocated to a public exhibition area for the first time to meet the public.

In his remarks, Shih Chun-fu, Deputy Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government, stated that since establishing Guangda Art Garden in Wufeng in 1977, Tsai Jung-yu has continued to bring together fellow ceramic art enthusiasts, and in 1984 founded “Ceramic Enthusiasts Gathering” spurring a trend of learning ceramic art in central Taiwan. He regards art as his faith, transforming his experiences of life, travel, nature, and the humanities into nourishment for his ceramic creations. From tea ware and flower vessels to sculptural bottles, and even stone-like forms created in clay, each piece carries the artist’s emotions and spiritual essence. He has been invited on numerous occasions to exhibit at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and The Museum of Kyoto in Japan, and has received the National Craft Achievement Award (2011) from the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute and the Ceramic Art Achievement Award (2013) from the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum. His artistic stature may truly be regarded as that of a national treasure.

This exhibition presents a total of 72 representative works, breaking the public’s stereotype that Tsai Jung-Yu is only the “Ceramic Master”. In addition to classic series such as Tolerance, Simplicity and Honesty, and Letting Go, which showcase highly sophisticated glazing techniques, the exhibition also specially includes his early paintings and photographic works, revealing the path of his artistic development. When Tsai Jung-Yu was young, he studied painting under Hou Shou-Feng , distilling an abstract visual vocabulary from realism; his photographic works, meanwhile, capture the textures of nature and the interplay of light and shadow. These sensory memories across different media were ultimately transformed into his precise command of ceramic glazes, proportion, and temperature, giving his works a distinctive vitality. This exhibition fully presents the integrated artistic achievement of ceramics, photography, and painting, allowing the public to gain an in-depth glimpse into the master’s diverse artistic vision shaped by half a century of creative dedication.

The Taichung City Seaport Art Center stated that, in order to allow the public to appreciate national treasure-level art at close range, the Center will invite Tsai Jung-yu to give a lecture in Exhibition Room A at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. At that time, the master will speak in person and lead the public to closely observe, within the small universe of his works, the depth and warmth forged through clay and fire.
